Trying the Xbox Insider Preview for Quake 4. ![]() The Game Pass release seems like the most logical reason for Quake 4, though we’re still not sure why Xbox needs to preview the 17-year-old Doom 3 Engine game. #QUAKE 4 STORY UPDATE#It doesn’t appear to be a special remaster or special update of any kind, although it has been reported that Quake 4 now runs seamlessly in higher resolution without file tweaking. We’d suggest that these games were being made backwards-compatible for Xbox consoles, except that Microsoft said it’s no longer doing so - and that’s of course the PC version of Quake 4. #QUAKE 4 STORY FOR FREE#To make things even more confusing, the multiplayer game Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is also available for preview - which was recently released for free on Steam. And yet, for some reason, Xbox wants people to “preview” this 17-year-old game. Quake 4 was developed by Raven Software and released in 2005, including a digital one on the fledgling Steam – where it has remained since. It’s not the most beloved FPS game, but it looks like Quake 4 may be releasing a Game Pass card - that’s the only thing that makes sense, as Xbox Insider wants players to “preview Quake 4. It's okay but nothing special.QuakeCon 2022 starts in August and it will certainly bring all kinds of fun announcements, and will hopefully coincide with the 2021 Quake remaster. All-in-all it was a pretty average, generic military shooter campaign set in the Quake 2 world with Doom 3's engine. It looked and played a certain way just because they reused the engine, not necessarily because that style fit in with the style of Quake II. And like I said, it felt far too similar to Doom 3. Quake 4 feels like the Quake 2 sequel nobody really needed or asked for, particularly when it already had 2 expansions. I still think the graphics look incredibly good, even now that they're quite old. The horror experience is also extremely well done, which made Doom 3 a very memorable FPS for me. I know these days classic arcadey action is more popular again, but for 2004 Doom 3 gave the same level of immersion in a real world that the original Doom gave in 1993. The UAC really comes alive as a lived-in, real scientific facility in a future you could imagine might actually happen (without the demons at least). The immersion factor really goes to a whole another level, not just visually, but also in the gameplay (reading emails, audio logs). Doom 3 was pretty revolutionary with the bumpmapping/specular lighting. #QUAKE 4 STORY MOD#When I first played Quake 4, I thought it was a paid mod for Doom 3, it's that similar. While I like the design of the new enemies and the redesign of the returning ones, I do miss the original Enforcer - I do not care for its Pinky-like replacement - and I am not a big fan of the Space Marines' new look either.ĭefinitely Doom 3.
